Will the Cuban Government be verifying that I’ve purchased an insurance policy?
Yes; once you arrive in Cuba, you will be asked to show proof of your coverage at the airport. Policies, insurance certificates and assistance cards will all be accepted as proof of coverage

Do I have to purchase my policy through a Cuban insurance company?
No. The Cuban government is asking tourists to purchase their travel insurance in their home country through a local provider. It is always good to do your research, and compare different policies and products before you leave; you might find that purchasing your coverage locally is more beneficial. However, if you are a US citizen, you will have to purchase your policy upon arrival in Cuba, due to embargo regulations.

Why is it better to purchase my policy before I leave?
When you travel, you want you and your family to have peace of mind. Making sure you have the best coverage before you leave is the best way of assuring this.
Most travel medical insurance policies for Canadians offer coverage of $5 million and provide the necessary coverage for trips to Cuba, including coverage for pre-existing medical conditions (subject to stability requirements and other policy terms and conditions).
If you opt to purchase your insurance once you land in Cuba, you will obtain medical coverage for $7,000 for medical emergencies and $5,000 for repatriation. These policies offer very little to no coverage for pre-existing medical conditions. These policies also do not include trip cancellation or interruption, both of which are available if you purchase in Canada.
For example, if you need to be evacuated by air you will be taken to Florida, the closest medical hub, which can cost between $5,000 - $15,000. Once in Florida, treatment and medication will be charged in US prices and one day in a US hospital can be between $4,000 - $5,000. If you are evacuated to your home province in Canada, this could cost anywhere between $10,000 - $35,000, or more depending on where you live.
Furthermore, if you fail to obtain travel medical insurance prior to departure from your home country, you will not be covered for medical expenses incurred en route to Cuba.
Remember to do your research and always purchase travel medical insurance when travelling to Cuba or anywhere else.
